I wrote an album in my last couple of years in Melbourne before moving to Berlin. I had hoped to release it sooner, but things didn’t quite transpire that way. Perhaps I should have taken my working title - A Past Yet To Come - as an omen of delays to come. Three years later, I feel a bit strange to finally be releasing it. For one, the music is quite different to what I make now. While I was making it, I felt it would be my great work, my opus. Listening now, it kind of feels like a failure.
The album is somewhat concerned with the function of memory. In particular, I wanted to allude to the process of creating and recalling memories. Musical ideas repeat throughout it, sometimes quite clearly, sometimes in a haze, like a half-forgotten memory. In achieving this aim, I think I have failed. However, it is still an idea that interests me. Indeed, I have started to work on new albums with similar concepts. Also, listening back to the album now, it is interesting how the moss of time has...
Wow, this blog doesn't get written in much. Here is what has become basically an annual update (Maybe I will make my website more active soon).
A few months ago I made some sounds for a film by Tamara Beyrouti, to be exhibited deep in the cavernous recesses under the old Berliner Kindl Brauerei. It was a fun thing to do. Here is the video in its entirety.
For a lot of the last year I have been in some sort of MaxMSP blackhole. This has been kind of enjoyable, in its own strange way, but I'm glad to be out of it and playing some gigs again.
Not so long ago I played at Loophole, and I kind of like some of what I played, so I've put it up on Soundcloud.
Sometimes I feel like this live knob twiddling and button pushing caper is starting to get somewhere. Still a real long way to go though.
Since moving to Berlin, I have been focusing less on producing tunes, and more on developing ways to improvise in a live setting. I have played several gigs in recent months, both solo and in groups, and I've been enjoying them thoroughly. I have found the Berlin community of improvised and experimental music very welcoming, for which I am grateful.
Maybe I'll change my mind again soon and go back to producing tunes with countless edits and automation lanes. Who knows? But for the moment I certainly don't miss the endless mouse clicking to make a tune 'in the box'.
Here is a recording from a recent solo gig at Studio Acht as part of their Sacred Realism series. I really like this series. I have seen some great performances there, and I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to perform there.
Welcome to my new site. Please feel free to look around. Make yourself at home.
Lots of exciting things have been happening for me. From early August, I will be based around Berlin. I am open to playing gigs anywhere around Europe. Please contact me if you think you might be interested in booking me, or catching up, or whatever it might be.
I have changed my name. I am no longer called 'Ripple'. At least, I will not be releasing any music under the name 'Ripple' for the foreseeable future. I am now simply called 'Daniel Craig'; the name I was born to use.
Which leads onto my final piece of news. I am in the process of finalising an album. It is 99.999% done. Hopefully it will reach your ears soon.
